Start with the cooling decision
Air conditioning is most useful when it solves a specific comfort or heat-health problem, not simply because a hot week makes every appliance look urgent. Start by identifying the room that needs cooling, when it is occupied, how much direct sun it receives, and whether the heat is a short-lived event or a repeated summer issue. A bedroom used at night, a south-facing home office, and a whole flat can need different solutions even when the outdoor temperature is the same.
Use a simple sequence before comparing products: reduce heat entering the room where practical, decide whether one room or several rooms need cooling, estimate the electricity use at your tariff, then review installation constraints. This keeps a temporary portable-unit decision separate from a longer-term fixed-system decision. It also avoids treating a retailer's capacity label, a national tariff average, or a headline installation price as though it applies to one home.
Estimate the electricity cost before you buy
The basic cooling-cost calculation is input power in kW multiplied by hours used per day, days used, and the electricity unit rate. For example, an appliance drawing 0.9 kW for six hours a day across 30 days uses about 162 kWh. At Ofgem's published average Direct Debit electricity unit rate of 26.11p/kWh for 1 July to 30 September 2026, that is about £42.30 of added electricity use. A standing charge normally remains payable whether or not an air conditioner is used, so do not add it again as a cooling-only cost.
Input power is not the same thing as cooling capacity. A 2.5 kW label may describe how much heat a unit can move rather than the electricity it consumes. Check the energy label, technical data sheet, or a compatible plug-in meter, then enter the added kWh and your actual unit rate in the UK Energy Bill Calculator. Use your own tariff for a decision: regional, payment-method, fixed-tariff, and time-of-use prices can differ from a published average.
Choose portable or split air conditioning
Portable air conditioning can suit one room, renters who cannot install fixed equipment, or a short-term need. Its performance depends on an effective exhaust route and window seal; leaving a large open gap can allow warm air back into the room. Consider the appliance's stated input power, sound level, drainage or condensate handling, window-kit fit, and where the hose can safely reach. A portable unit is not automatically low-cost simply because it has no installation quote.
A split system separates indoor and outdoor equipment and can be a better fit for repeated cooling or more than one room, but the decision includes more than efficiency. Ask how the outdoor unit, condensate drain, pipework, electrical connection, controls, access, commissioning, maintenance, and noise will be handled. Compare proposals that list the same scope. Prepare for installation and heatwaves
For a fixed system, check property and installation constraints before ordering equipment. Tenants, leaseholders, and flat owners may need consent under their tenancy, lease, or building rules. Planning, building-regulations, and electrical requirements can also depend on the location and design. Refrigerant work on stationary systems is not a casual DIY task: use a qualified installer and ask who is responsible for commissioning, leak checks, warranty support, and future maintenance.
You can often reduce cooling electricity use by reducing heat gain first. Use external shading, blinds, curtains, or shutters before strong sun reaches glazing where practical; limit avoidable internal heat; keep doors closed to rooms you are not cooling; and use realistic comfort settings. Timers, clean filters, and a well-fitted portable exhaust route can prevent avoidable run time. During dangerous heat, prioritise the needs of people at greater risk rather than turning off essential cooling purely to avoid a high-price period.
